White "hairs" on stems

My tomato plant has white "hairs" on the main stem, and only one small tomato on the huge vine.
What are these hairs and do I need to get rid of the vine??

Mine do too...I think it is cause of all the water we have been having. They look like roots to me -- is this a problem???
