White "hairs" on stems

by Kathy
(Mobile, Alabama)

My tomato plant has white "hairs" on the main stem, and only one small tomato on the huge vine.

What are these hairs and do I need to get rid of the vine??

The hairs are the plants natural defense system
by: geedubzzz

The hairs are the tomato plant's natural defense system, kind of like humans have our immune system as our defense system. The hairs are known as glandular trichomes and they naturally secrete a chemical compound with antibiotic qualities as well as pathogen resistance and they also deter insects. You may have noticed your plants do not have to many insects on them compared to other plants in your garden.
