Fused Tomatoes?
by: Eric

Hello Doug!
Tomatoes sometimes have a mind of their own! I think what you are describing could be caused by fused blossoms. Are you seeing double or even triple flowers? This is sometimes called "megabloom." Since megablooms are usually two or three flowers fused together, they have to be pollinated two or three times as much to grow evenly. If they aren't pollinated well enough, they will be "Catfaced" and mutated looking. Sometimes the plant will just drop it of it's own accord, but if you don't want ugly or misshapen fruit, you could pick them off.

Catfacing happens when pollenization occurs in abnormally cold weather. Also high soil N levels and any disturbance of the anthers during pollen shedding (anthesis) can also increase the possibility that catfacing occurs. and it's normally seen on large fruited varieties and the severity of it is often variety dependent.

There is no harm that I have heard of from these so you can leave them or try and fix them but either way it will okay. Thanks for visiting the site! Please let me know if you have any other questions!
