Fried Green Tomatoes Recipes
These recipes for fried green tomatoes are a tasty way to use
your green tomatoes that don't reach maturity before the first frost.
Or if you can't wait till then to try out this treat, pick some fresh off the vine
before they're ripe any time during the season.
Country Fried Green Tomatoes
This recipe uses a flour coating and butter for frying.
After they're done you can serve the crisp slices as-is or add optional cream
gravy for a traditional southern side dish.
Makes 6 servings.
Ingredients
6 medium green tomatoes, cored and sliced 1/2-inch thick
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup light cream or half-and-half (optional for gravy)
Directions

Sprinkle tomato slices with sugar and let stand for 15 minutes.

Combine flour, salt, and pepper. Dip tomato slices in the mixture and coat.

Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a skillet. Brown the tomatoes slowly, turning once.

Remove each slice when golden and crisp. Keep warm on an ovenproof platter in a warm oven
until all are cooked. Add more butter to skillet as needed.

For crisp slices, serve immediately, plain, or as sandwich filling.

For a southern touch, add 1/2 cup light cream or half-and-half
to skillet drippings and stir to gravy consistency. Pour over cooked tomatoes. and serve.
Fried Green Tomatoes
This easy recipe uses a cornmeal coating and traditional frying in bacon
fat. Go ahead and indulge yourself!
Makes 4 servings.
Ingredients
3 medium green tomatoes, cored and sliced 1/2-inch thick
1/2 cup boxed corn muffin mix
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
3 tablespoons bacon fat or lard

Coat the tomato slices by dipping in the corn muffin mix.

Brown the tomato slices in the bacon fat in a medium-hot skillet, turning once.

Season with salt and pepper and serve.
